Laura Tolpeznikova

Based between Italy and Latvia, Laura Tolpeznikova creates atmospheric landscape paintings that explore memory, light, silence, and the profound connection between humans and nature.

Born in Riga, Latvia, Laura studied at the Latvian Academy of Arts and later continued her artistic education as an exchange student at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, Italy. During her studies, she focused extensively on figurative painting, developing a strong foundation in classical techniques and observation.

From an early age, Laura felt a deep desire to express herself through art. She began painting with watercolours and recalls drawing and painting from the age of seven, perhaps even earlier. Becoming an artist was a lifelong dream that naturally evolved into her professional path.

Laura grew up in a small town near Riga, surrounded by forests, meadows, and the Daugava River. These landscapes left a lasting impression and continue to shape her artistic vision. Nature remains one of the central themes in her work. Long walks through forests provide inspiration, where she observes changing light, rhythm, and atmosphere, often making sketches that later develop into large-scale paintings.

Since 2008, Laura has lived and worked between Northern Italy and Latvia. The natural environments of both countries continue to inspire her practice. Surrounded by forests and mountains, she finds endless sources of contemplation and creativity. Her paintings seek to capture moments of silence, stillness, and unity with the natural world—experiences that, in her view, can be expressed more fully through visual language than through words.

Rivers, forests, spider webs, and star-filled skies frequently appear in her work as reflections of the beauty and mystery of the natural world. Each painting represents a fragment of a larger universe, inviting viewers into a space of quiet reflection and connection. While many of her works are devoid of direct human presence, Laura also enjoys portraying people, exploring character, emotion, and expression.

Working primarily on large-scale canvases, Laura creates immersive paintings that encourage a deeper awareness of light, atmosphere, and the subtle relationships between nature, memory, and perception.
